Gençay was a renowned Full Professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada and, since 2015, taught the subject Mathematical Analysis for Economic Research in the Master's Degree at Economics and Finance (MEF) at the University of Navarra.

His main area of research was Financial Econometrics, pioneering the application of the Wavelet Transform to high frequency time series. The multidisciplinarity of his work led him to publish in academic journals in Economics, Physics and Finance.

"Our students really enjoyed their classes at Master's Degree. Ramo gave them a different perspective and taught them a lot, not only in Financial Statistics, but also about how to make a Master's Degree and a doctorate, and life in general. He was one of the kindest people I have ever met and we will miss his smile and warmth towards other people," recalls MEF's director Markus Kinateder.

For her part, the coordinator of the University of Navarra's International Office , María del Carmen Bielza, remembers Ramo as "a very affectionate person who transmitted peace and confidence wherever he went". Bielza was the person who invited Professor Gençay to come to the University of Navarra for the first time.

Likewise, Ignacio Rodríguez Carreño, professor at School and Deputy Director of the MEF, assures that "it is very sad and I feel a great sorrow for what has happened to Ramo. He was not only an incredible professional and co-author, he was my friend. He was a man with a wonderful sense of humor, with an enormous zest for life, and he was charming, very attentive and welcoming, with an excellent human attention ". Professor Rodríguez Carreño remembers with special fondness 'juevintxos' in Pamplona with Ramo and the students and the walks in the forests of Vancouver.

From the School Economics and Business Administration of the University of Navarra we express our most sincere condolences to his wife and two daughters, accompanying them in their feelings. We send them all our affection and we keep them in our prayers.
