General Manager "In the medium and long term deadline, layoffs are the worst decision that can be made", said the General Manager of Banco General Rumiñahui and human resources expert, Alejandro Ribadeneira, during the seventh session of the cycle 'My Experience Managing People' of the Master's Degree at Personnel Management Service in Organizations of the School of Economics.

Ribadeneira maintains that the best business in times of crisis is not to lay off, but to count on the commitment of employees to recover business. Properly managing human resources gives incredible results, says the expert, the core topic is - he continues - in giving a strategic role to department of Personnel Management Service.

When there is a bankruptcy status , someone has to pay for that status, says Ribadeneira. In the case of Banco General Rumiñahui (BGR) what happened was that, at the time of the crisis, the decision was made to fire the managers. After the fall of the head, the parts of the body begin to decompose, he explains. This decision, the expert believes, was the worst of all and led to a strong change in the organization.

In his opinion, and after analyzing the causes of the crisis, Ribadeneira affirms that the pillars on which BGR's recovery was based were: employees and customers. The former were motivated through non-financial incentives, while the latter were built up thanks to the employees' attitude. If employees are committed, happy and motivated, this attitude is transferred to customers, who become prescribers and return to the bank again and again.
