Pamplona is the sixth Spanish city with the highest issue of vertical mobility infrastructures implemented since the beginning of the twentieth century, according to a study led by University of Navarra professor Juan José Pons. The research will be presented this week at the I congress of mobility Vertical Urban , organized by the academic center in partnership with the City Council of Pamplona.

The meeting, which will take place on Thursday, September 24, and Friday, September 25, will be inaugurated by the mayor of the Consistory, Joseba Asiron; the President of the University, Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero; and the director of the School of Architecture Miguel A. Alonso del Val.

The project of research, which has been developed over the last two years, has identified and geo-referenced more than 400 infrastructures located in Spain, including elevators, escalators and escalators, funiculars and cable cars, among others.

Pamplona ranks sixth in the ranking, with nine Infrastructures of mobility Vertical Urban (IMUV), 2.2% of the total, below Barcelona (72 infrastructures), Bilbao (29), Eibar (27), Santa Coloma de Gramanet (18) and Donostia-San Sebastián (18).

Thus, Navarre ranks third, together with Andalusia, among the autonomous communities with the most vertical urban mobility elements, with 2.6% of the total.

These infrastructures facilitate walking and cycling in cities and help to development of a more sustainable mobility , in addition to providing support for people who live, work and visit urban areas with steep slopes, "especially the elderly and people with disabilities," said Juan José Pons.

The research, which places Barcelona as the leading city with 72 IMUV (17.3% of the total), has been developed by the department of Geography of the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra and will be presented at the congress of mobility Urbana.
