"Finding the model business is the main task that remains for the banking industry". This was stated by Ángel Cano, BBVA's CEO (2009-2015), to EL PAÍS during an interview with interview he gave to this newspaper at the framework of his lecture 'El futuro de las industrias, su transformación y las personas', as part of the opening of the master's degree programs offered by the School of Economics of the University of Navarra in Madrid.

"Another critical issue is corporate governance, which continues to be weak in Spain. Why are Popular, Abengoa or Pescanova dying? All three have died because of a problem of corporate governance," said Cano. Along these lines, the former CEO believes that the industry "still has a very important transformation ahead of it. The first thing is to find model for distribution. Secondly, you can't stop investing in technology because if you don't, others will pass you by.

On the other hand, the former CEO believes that in order to succeed, it is very important to connect with employees. "In life, it is the people who keep companies going in the long run," he said deadline. He added: "What matters in startups are not the ideas, what matters is that there are people to execute them".

Ángel Cano served as Chief Executive Officer of group BBVA for six years until 2015. He joined BBVA in 1991 as controller until 2000 when he was appointed Director Finance.
