Laura Laiglesia, student of the doctoral program in Food, Physiology and Health of the School of Pharmacy and Nutrition, has won the second award for the best poster in the international congress of The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), which took place in Sitges.
The international meeting addressed the subject of brown fat, which is precisely the area in which Laura has developed her doctorate . This study, in which other members of the group of Nutridynamics of the research center in Nutrition of the academic center have actively collaborated, is part of the research projects of the group financed in part by the Ministry of Economics and Competitiveness and the Government of Navarra and directed by Dr. María Jesús Moreno. "Our communication, entitled Maresin 1 activates brown adipose tissue and improves insulin sensitivity in DIO mice, explains how this compound -derived from omega-3 fatty acids- activates brown ad ipose tissue. This tissue acts by consuming glucose and lipids to obtain energy in the form of heat (it is a thermogenic tissue), and we are particularly interested in the importance that increasing its activity could have - for example, by administering Maresin 1 - as a new effective therapy to combat obesity and diabetes subject 2," explains the future doctor.
At present, these programs of study are in the preclinical phase and therefore their efficacy in humans has not yet been demonstrated.
