The Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, designed by Francisco Mangado, a professor at the University of Navarra, has won the RIBA Awards for International Excellence. This extension project has been recognized with other awards, such as the award International Chicago Athenaeum 2016, the XXIII award 'Asturias' of Architecture, the Civic Trust Awards 2016, the Trophée Archizinc 2016, the Archmarathon Award 2016 and the International Architecture Award for 2016. In addition, the project was selected in the INFILL category for the Spanish Pavilion at the XV Venice Biennale 2016.

Francisco Mangado has highlighted three main lines in the architecture of the Fine Arts Museum extension: the urban vocation of the building, light as an instrument and a clear structure for the organization of spaces, which allows the exhibition of the pieces with dignity, with a certain perspective and with the possibility of the building being adapted according to the needs.
