On December 1 and 2, the congress 'Baroque and Modernity: Crossroads of Art and Historiography' will be held in Venice. It is organized by the School of Architecture (ETSA) of the University of Navarra and the Istituto Universitario de Architettura di Venezia (IUAV), and is co-funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. It is directed by Carlos Chocarro, professor at campus in Pamplona, and coordinated by framework Mulazzani, of the Università di Ferrara.

"The difficult harmonization of the terms 'Baroque' and 'modernity' is not only a Spanish problem. The intense work of revaluation of the Italian Baroque, with artistic and historiographical repercussions at international level, also implies overcoming consolidated paradigms and prejudices. The seminar will address this issue from the historiographical and artistic point of view through the analysis of particularly significant cases," explain the organizers.

11 experts from Spain and Italy

During the congress, experts from Spanish and Italian campus will analyze the influence of the Baroque on the avant-garde of the 20th century. Among other topics, they will analyze the transparency of the Cathedral of Toledo, the Royal Palace of Madrid, Goya's paintings, the cultural policy of Franco's regime between 1940 and 1960, as well as the influence of this context in the emergence of Spanish informalism, of which Antonio Saura, Manolo Millares, or Tapies himself, among others, were protagonists.

Carlos Chocarro and Francisco Javier Caspistegui, from the University of Navarra; Juan José Lahuerta, from the School of Architecture of Barcelona; Jorge Fernández-Santos, from the Universitat Jaume I; Sara Muniain, from the University of San Jorge; and Jorge Luis Marzo, from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

In 2012, the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra will host the Spanish edition of congress.
