Echeverría House, Arizkun

Located in the couple of Lamiarrita, between Ordoki and Bozate, this building was constructed between 1712 and 1713 at the behest of Juan Tomás de Goyeneche. Born in the nearby Goyenechea house in Ordoki in 1681, he settled in Madrid at a very young age under the protection of his maternal uncle, Juan de Goyeneche. He was chief accountant of the Treasury and treasurer to Queen Mariana of Neoburg. When his father died, he became the owner of his native house, now disappeared, which he managed to elevate to the status of palace armoury corporal with a seat in the Cortes Generales in 1721. He settled there when he returned to Baztán for good. The contract to build the Echeverría house was signed with the French stonemason Juan de Urrutia, although the plans were drawn up by the master builder Juan Antonio San Juan, who designed a horizontal block of rendered walls with ashlar chains in the openings and corners and a hipped roof. He arranged a portico on the façade with seven semicircular arches and, on the two upper floors, as many openings - rhythmically distributed windows and balconies with no projections - to finish off with three dormers. The coat of arms incorporates the cross of Santiago, as Juan Tomás wore his habit.
