Jarola Palace, Elbete

This palace was built by the stonemason Juan de Gamio in 1674 at the request of its then owner, Captain Miguel de Vergara. A versatile and enterprising man, he combined his military activity with business in America as well as in Seville, Cadiz and Madrid. In 1671, while in Buenos Aires, he acquired the old Jarola palace through a proxy, which would be replaced by this sumptuous construction. The building, with its cubic structure, plastered walls, stone façade and large eaves development, was inspired, according to the construction contract, by other recent stately buildings in the area such as the Apeztegui palace in Erratzu, the Urdanibea house in Lesaka and the Arraztoa palace in Amaiur. But it also served as model for later buildings such as the Town Hall of the valley, erected in 1696 when Vergara himself was mayor of the valley, or the Datue palace in Elizondo, linked to the Aldecoa family, built in the 18th century.
