Borda Palace, Amaiur

The building was the estate of the Borda family, a family dedicated to business. In 1672 Martín de Borda founded an elective entailed estate that passed into the hands of his son Juan, who obtained in 1701 from the Navarrese courts the title of "hidalguía" (nobility). It was this businessman who was in charge of rebuilding the family home, giving it its present appearance. For this purpose, in 1702 he hired Juan and Pedro de Gaztambide, stonemasons, and Lorenzo Arrieta and Domingo de Echeverría, carpenters, who erected the building following the plans given by Juan Antonio San Juan, resulting in a stone façade construction with a set of cushioned ashlars, a portico and a balcony on the main floor. He succeeded to the head of the family Juan Tomás, who was able to attend to the General Courts of the kingdom thanks to a seat inherited from his relative José Soraburu and achieved for his house of Amaiur the category of palace armory corporal in 1728, thanks to the donation of 4,000 silver reales that he gave for the reconstruction of Roncesvalles after it had suffered a fire.
