Façade of Pamplona Cathedral
The old Romanesque doorway
The old doorway of the Romanesque cathedral, preserved in the Gothic rebuilding of the temple, survived until the end of the 18th century, when it was decided to replace it with another more in keeping with the taste of the time. Thanks to the plans of Ventura Rodríguez, in which the new floor plan was superimposed on the Romanesque doorway, we know that it had two doors, each with three archivolts on their corresponding columns, in such a way that it was very similar to the Platerías doorway of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Fortunately, several of the capitals, reliefs and corbels that decorated it have been preserved in the Museum of Navarre. As for its chronology, the most probable date is considered to be the second or third decades of the 12th century.
