Students from the University of Navarra are carrying out a study to know the needs of homeless people in Pamplona. The project is part of the subject of Demography, which is being taken by students in the 3rd year of Governance at School of Economics. It is a subject with the seal of Service Learning, a model of teaching that combines the knowledge of each field with the link with the environment and social responsibility.

The 40 students of the subject intend to humanize the statistical study of populations by counting the needs of homeless people. The professor of the subject, Guillem Ripoll, has raised the problem of homelessness and the importance of knowing the status and needs of these people to the students.

Before starting the project, the professor contacted four associations working on homelessness in Pamplona: Xilema, París 365, Cáritas and Bocatas Navarra, and established a closer contact with the first three: "In the conversations I had with them we corroborated the need to carry out a study of these characteristics and I proposed it as the project of the subject".

To carry out the study, the students have made a questionnaire. On Monday, November 8, 150 students will go through the streets of Pamplona in order to interview homeless people with this questionnaire .

Training session with the Xilema Foundation

With the goal to cover as many neighborhoods as possible issue have managed a "volunteer activities express" with Tantaka, the solidarity time bank of the University. In addition to helping with the count, those who collaborate will also bring something hot and a conversation to those people. Before starting, all volunteers participated in a training session with the Xilema Foundation.

Guillem Ripoll states that "this subject initiative allows students to work in a realproject and with problems that go beyond theory. In addition to taking away the skills, they are left with an unforgettable experience. They will spend a lot of time getting close to a social problem, which is relevant, and this will make them more human".
