Times of Oman (Oman) and The New York Times (USA) have received the award Peter Sullivan / Best of Show for the print and digital categories, respectively, in the 23rd edition of the Malofiej Awards for journalistic infographics, organized by the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SND-E).

The international jury of the twenty-third edition of the Malofiej Awards, meeting at the School of Communication of the University of Navarra from March 15 to 18, has awarded two prizes, for the print and online categories. Times of Oman has won the maximum award in print version for its graphic 'On the ball', and The New York Times has obtained the same award in online category for the work 'Areas Under ISIS Control'.

In addition, the jury awarded a total of 17 gold medals, 41 silver medals and 73 bronze medals, both in categories of work published in print and online media. This year, 1,266 entries from 150 media from 32 countries were submitted to the competition, a figure that equals the record number of media participation in previous editions. This year, 91 media participated in print graphics categories and 59 media in online graphics categories.

The award Miguel Urabayen award for best map in the print category went to National Geographic (USA) for its work 'California Water Shortage', and to The New York Times for its work 'The Most Detailed Maps You'll See From the Midterm Elections' for the online category. This award was established nine years ago in honor of Visual Communication professor and film critic Miguel Urabayen, who has been involved in journalistic infographics and the Malofiej awards since the beginning. Urabayen was the one who 'discovered' cartographer Alejandro Malofiej in Argentina and saw in him a pioneer of the genre that has undoubtedly revolutionized the print media in the last decade. In report of the late Malofiej the University of Navarra instituted the awards and the World Infographics Summit, which takes place every year in the School of Communication and turns Pamplona for a week in the world capital of infographics by bringing together leading professionals from around the world.

Of the 131 medals awarded by the jury, 82 were for print (12 gold, 24 silver and 46 bronze medals) and 49 for online (5 gold, 17 silver and 27 bronze medals). The media awarded gold medals were National Geographic Magazine (USA), The New York Times (USA), South China Morning Post (China) and Times of Oman (Oman).

This year's jury was chaired by Karen Yourish, Infographics Editor at The New York Times (USA), and composed of Adolfo Arranz (director creative, MediaCorp, Singapore); Manuel Cabrera (coordinator Art, El Telegrafo, Ecuador); Marcelo Duhalde (publisher Infographics, Times of Oman, Oman); Feilding Cage(publisher Special Projects, Guardian Visuals, UK); Martin Gamache (publisher senior Maps, National Geographic Magazine, USA); Randy Krum (president of InfoNewt and author of 'Cool Infographics', USA); Eleanor Lutz (freelance infographer, Tabletop Whale, USA); Allison McCann (visual journalist, FiveThirtyEight, USA); Alissa Scheller (infographer, The Huffington Post, USA); Monica Serrano (freelance infographer and illustrator, USA); and Matthew Swift (publisher for Infographics, The Times of London, UK).

23rd World Infographics Summit Malofiej

The awards were announced on Friday, March 20, at the end of the 23rd Malofiej World Infographics Summit, which brought together more than 130 professionals from around the world. As in previous editions, the members of the jury were also the speakers at congress, in addition to other guests such as Sandra Rendgen, who showed some of the fifty maps by Minard, a 19th century French cartographer; and Kate McLean closed the program with her sensory maps.

In addition, the annual volume Malofiej was presented, which includes the winners of the last edition, an interview and several articles on the world of Infographics.

Prior to the Summit, the "Show, Don't Tell!" workshop for professionals was held from Sunday, March 15 through March 18. Led by regular and internationally recognized instructors John Grimwade, Alberto Cairo and Geoff McGhee, nineteen journalists developed two exercises. The first dealt with the activity of the Volkswagen Navarra plant in Landaben and the second was a self-portrait. The participants came from countries as diverse as Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Peru, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Spain.

The next quotation Malofiej, the issue 24, will be held in Pamplona from March 6 to 11, 2016.
