The New York Times, big winner at the 22nd edition of the Malofiej Awards

The jury of the 22nd edition of the Malofiej International Infographics Awards awards a total of 16 gold, 50 silver and 90 bronze medals.

The New York Times (USA) has received the award Peter Sullivan / Best of Show for the print and digital categories in the 22nd edition of the Malofiejn Awards. Malofiej Awards Awards for journalistic infographics, organized by the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SND-E) and the School of Communication of the University of Navarra. The international jury of the 22nd edition of the Malofiej Awards, meeting at School from March 23 to 26, has awarded two prizes, for the print and online categories, as it did last year. The New York Times has won the top award in print for its graphic 'State Gun Laws Enacted in Year Since Newtown', and won the same award in the online category for work 'How Y'all, Youse and You Guys Talk'.

In addition, the jury awarded a total of 16 gold medals, 50 silver medals and 90 bronze medals, both in categories of work published in print and online media. Spain's El Correo and Errea Comunicación stand out with one gold medal each. This year, 1,290 entries from 139 media outlets from 34 countries were submitted to the competition, a figure that represents a 10 percent increase over last year's entries. 

Spanish newspapers received a total of 14 medals. In addition to the aforementioned gold medals for Errea Comunicación and El Correo, the latter received another silver medal (for an infographic on the bicentenary of the Battle of Vitoria) and four bronze medals, including one for the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination. For another infographic on the same subject topic, La Vanguardia received another bronze medal, which joins a second one on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Columbus Monument in Barcelona. La Voz de Galicia also received a silver medal for a work on the Santiago de Compostela train accident. El Mundo also received a bronze medal for another work on the same accident. The Spanish awards are completed with three other bronze medals: to RTVE.es for a work on fracking, to signature Brands & Roses for a culinary infographic and to the University of Navarra for its unified report for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The award Miguel Urabayen award for best map in the print category went to National Geographic Magazine (USA) for its work 'Drilling the Prairie', and to The New York Times for its work 'How Y'all, Youse and You Guys Talk' for the online category. This award was instituted eight years ago in honor of Visual Communication professor and film critic Miguel Urabayen, who has been linked from the beginning to journalistic infographics and the Malofiej awards. Urabayen was the one who discovered cartographer Alejandro Malofiej in Argentina and saw in him a pioneer of the genre that has undoubtedly revolutionized the print media in the last decade. In report of the late Malofiej the School of Communication of the University of Navarra instituted the awards and the World Infographics Summit, which takes place every year at Sciences Building Social and turns Pamplona for a week in the world capital of infographics by bringing together leading professionals from around the world.

The awards were presented on Friday, March 28, at the end of the 22nd Malofiej World Infographics Summit, which brought together more than 100 professionals from around the world. The next quotation Malofiej, issue 23, will be held in Pamplona from March 17 to 22, 2015.
