José Antonio Vidal-Quadras died this afternoon at the Clínica de la Universidad de Navarra, in Pamplona. Vidal-Quadras, who had overcome several illnesses in recent times from his deep Christian faith, died at the age of 83. After a long career as a journalist, José Antonio joined the academic staff of the School of Communication at the University of Navarra in the 1983-1984 academic year. Since then he has been the teacher of numerous promotions of journalists, with whom he always maintained a fluid contact and to whom he sent his well-known letter Desde Faustino for almost twenty years.

José Antonio Vidal-Quadras was born in Barcelona in 1931. He attended programs of study in Barcelona until he moved to Navarra, where he completed his school years as a boarder in Lekaroz. Later he moved to Santiago de Compostela, where he graduated in Law at the University of Santiago de Compostela. In 1959 he completed the programs of study of the Official School of Journalism, being registered in the Official Register of Journalists with the issue 3.344. He would culminate his academic programs of study years later (October 14, 1991) when being already professor of the School of Communication of the University of Navarra he obtained the Degree of Doctor in Journalism when defending his thesis José Ortiz-Echagüe: photographer (1886-1890), directed by professor Gonzalo Redondo.

The old saying that he was a cook before he was a friar can be properly applied to José Antonio Vidal-Quadras, since for 25 years he worked as a journalist at essay. First as editor of Diario Regional, in Valladolid, in 1955 and 1956. And, between that year and 1974, in all positions (from editor to director) in La Actualidad Española, with a brief hiatus in 1959 when he worked as section chief in Europa Press. During his last year at La Actualidad Española he began to collaborate with the magazine Mundo Cristiano, where he was director for eight years, until 1981.

After these years working as a journalist, José Antonio Vidal-Quadras joined the faculty of School of Communication at the University of Navarra in the 1983-84 academic year as professor of essay Journalism, replacing professors Julio Martínez Torres, Fernando Pérez Ollo and José Luis Martínez Albertos (the latter taught theory). During his years at the School, he was the publisher de From Faustino from the spring of 1992, starting at issue 7, until his last issue in 2009. His close contact with so many graduating classes of students led him to collaborate in the University of Navarra's publication Nuestro Tiempo. José Antonio Vidal-Quadras joined the magazine's team when it began to publish a section at partnership with the Graduate Association with information on the University's alumni . Since then, and as long as his health has allowed him, José Antonio Vidal-Quadras has continued to visit the magazine's essay every day at School de Comunicación.
