Collateral altarpieces

The main altarpiece is complemented artistically, symbolically and liturgically by eight collateral altarpieces erected throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The oldest dates from the first half of the 17th century and corresponds to the altarpiece of the Ánimas, which houses canvases of a popular character framed in a refined architecture. The other altarpieces date from the end of the 17th century and the 18th century. The altarpiece of the Sacred Heart dates from around 1670, retouched around 1760 with rococo decoration. Between similar dates is the beautiful altarpiece of San José with a whimsical Rococo decoration added in 1763 by Pedro Labarrera. Also from around the end of the 17th century are the altarpieces of the Rosary, the altarpiece of the Vera Cruz, with a high quality Hispano-Flemish Gothic Calvary. In the 18th century, the altarpieces of the Inmaculada, which houses a beautiful candlestick image of the Virgin, the Pilar and the Dolorosa were erected. The latter, which houses a beautiful articulated recumbent Christ, probably employee in the Descent from the Cross, is particularly noteworthy.
