The group of research Siglo de Oro (GRISO) of the University of Navarra has recently published two new volumes, the 27th and 28th, of the 'Library Services Indiana', collection of the Centro de programs of study Indianos, an organization that brings together all the research of the group related to America, with special attention to the colonial period. Published by the German publishing house Vervuert/Iberoamericana, the first of the books is El cautiverio en la literatura del Nuevo Mundo, an edition coordinated by Miguel Donoso, Mariela Insúa and Carlos Mata.

The works included in the volume offer several approaches to the topic of captivity in the New World, with a wide range of approaches that aims to provide a representative overview of different periods, authors, genres and works from different methodological perspectives. Several programs of study analyze the presence of this theme in the chronicles of the Indies and, above all, in such a representative work as the Cautiverio feliz de Núñez de Pineda y Bascuñán. Another group is made up of contributions focused on the figure of the captive, with a presence from the chronicles of the Indies to the historical narrative of later centuries. Finally, other works focus on the cases of captives who are assimilated to their captors, and on the motif of the captivity of love in the theater of the Golden Age, or study other more modern dramatic recreations that recover the same topic.

The works gathered here correspond to the papers of the congress co-organized by GRISO-University of Navarra and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, held in Santiago de Chile in June 2009.

Critical edition of El Marañón, by Aguilar y Córdoba

The second book is a critical edition of El Marañón, by Diego de Aguilar y Córdoba. Written in Peru between 1578 and 1596, it is one of the most complete works on the expedition of Pedro de Ursúa and Lope de Aguirre in search of El Dorado (1560-1561). The text is based on several testimonies, especially the account of Francisco Vázquez, whom Aguilar met in Peru years after the events. Aguilar carried out a rewriting of his main source in which he integrated the events of the expedition into Peruvian history, while giving the plot a rhetorical and tragic slant. From Francisco Vázquez's account, Aguilar wrote one of the most extensive and interesting chronicles about the famous expedition in search of El Dorado, which would end with Lope de Aguirre's rebellion.
