Between 30 and 50% of the environmental impacts generated by a building throughout its existence are due to the manufacture of the materials with which it is constructed. This was indicated at the School of Architecture University of Navarra by Albert Cuchí, professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, who highlighted the figure for its quantitative value and because"these impacts are not evaluated in the same way as those that occur during the use of the building and which are regulated in the technical code, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Somehow, they are unknown and there is no awareness of them".

On the occasion of the session he gave at the Master's Degree in design and management Environmental Buildings, the expert recalled the ecological footprint of the Building sector in Spain. "In 2006, a group of researchers prepared a report for the Ministry of Housing, which showed that 30% of the country's Economics emissions, according to the protocol Kyoto methodology, were attributable to construction," he said.

Living spaces efficiently
In this sense, he indicated that the current real estate crisis is an opportunity to contribute to sustainability."We should not think about new construction, but about the rehabilitation of the building stock to achieve a habitability with less greenhouse gas emissions," he stressed.

In order for Spain to have a low-carbon Economics ," he commented, "we must act on the housing stock. If their CO2 emissions are reduced, they can be 'rescued' for other productive activities that do contribute to achieving a healthy and competitive Economics ".

He also encouraged "reinterpreting buildings and living spaces efficiently" because, in his opinion, "it is not the building that consumes energy, but the people who use it". For Albert Cuchí, this means "reducing carbon dependency through everyday habits, such as lighting rooms with efficient lamps or approaching a window to read. It is possible to live comfortably without being complicit in the brutal transformation of the world.
