Euskarabidea and the University of Navarra sign an agreement agreement to promote training in Basque for future journalists.

The Government of Navarre will promote internships for students of the School of Communication in media that use this language

The Government of Navarra and the University of Navarra have signed today a partnership agreement to promote training in Basque for future journalists. The text has been signed by the director General Manager of Euskarabidea, Xabier Azanza Arbizu; the dean of the School of Communication of the academic center, Mónica Herrero Subías; and the director General Manager of the Foundation business-University of Navarra, Ignacio Uría Rodríguez.

The agreement, signed for the second consecutive year, aims to improve and expand the training of university students by promoting internships in media outlets that use the Basque language to disseminate their content.

The internships, which will be carried out entirely in this language, are aimed at student body of third and fourth year of Audiovisual Communication, Journalism and advertising and Public Relations -degrees that are studied in the School of Communication- that accredit knowledge of this language. Another of the purposes of agreement is to offer the media that use this language the opportunity to have future professionals in the sector.

The Government of Navarra, through Euskarabidea, will contribute a total of 5,000 euros this second year. The internships will be managed through the Foundation business-University of Navarra, an entity promoted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Navarra, the Confederation of Businessmen of Navarra and the University of Navarra as an instrument of relationship between the business world and the university.

The agreement is valid for one year. A monitoring commission will be created to ensure compliance with the provisions of the contract, which will be chaired by the director General Manager of the high school Navarro del Vascuence. It will also be integrated by the director of the Service of development of the Basque language and the head of the Section of Promotion of the Basque language of the above mentioned organism (this last one as secretary), a person designated by the School of Communication and another one by the Foundation business-University of Navarre.

The purpose of agreement coincides with one of the objectives established by the Foral Law of Basque, that of promote the presence of Basque in the public and private media of Navarre. Likewise, the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages establishes, in its article 11, that the public administrations will support the training of journalists and other professionals for the media that use regional or minority languages.

The University of Navarra, for its part, has promoted the teaching and research in Basque since 1964, when the Chair of language and Basque Culture was created. Each year it organizes various initiatives aimed at students of all degree programs, with a twofold focus: language, on the one hand, and culture (ethnology and ethnography), on the other. Among the activities related to communication, the conference of Journalism in Basque, with the participation of representatives of various media, stands out.
