Twenty-two students from the University of Navarra competed in nine sports disciplines at the Spanish University Championships 2025, which were held between April 1 and May 22. The Sports Service of the University, with the sponsorship Caja Rural de Navarra, has promoted the participation in this competition, which is organized every year by the Higher Sportscommittee in different venues throughout Spain. With more than 50 years of experience, these championships promote physical activity in individual or collective categories where each student represents his or her university.
Students from the University of Navarra participated in nine different modalities: Sonia Rup, in fencing; Bosco Saiz and Joseba Uriarte, in paddle tennis; Igor Colina, in judo; Ainhoa Villanueva and Ander Gorostidi, in karate; Juan Vega, in golf; Sebastián Amaya, Myngyao Huo and Sacha Laurent, in table tennis; Nora Lamosa,Laura Martínez, Ariane Sanzol, Nuara Solchaga and Ainhoa Toquero, in athletics; Kai Odriozola, Daniel Loidi and Martín Avello, in surfing; and Lucía Ibarrola, Javier Julián González, Isabel Gil and Alejandro Ibarrola, in tennis. Ten of the fourteen Schools of the University of Navarra were represented, being the School of Engineering-Tecnun, based in San Sebastian, the one with the largest issue of students: a total of six students.
Pablo Martín Aguado, coordinator of the Sports Service of the University of Navarra, highlights the excellent reception that these championships have among students, taking into account that many of them coincide with university exams. He also thanks Caja Rural de Navarra for its sponsorship and underlines its commitment to sport at such important stages as the university. "Their support is fundamental to promote sports internship among young people," he emphasizes. Although the main goal is to promote physical activity, the University of Navarra team has also managed to stand out with a gold medal in surfing, a bronze medal in longboarding and a sixth place in golf.
The students who participated in this competition describe the experience as unforgettable days in which they were able to enjoy their hobby, stay active and socialize with other students. Juan Vega, a student of the double Degree in Industrial and Mechanical design Engineering at Tecnun-School of Engineering, obtained a sixth place in golf just five months after suffering a muscle tear in his right hand. In his own words: "this experience has been fundamental to discover what I am capable of as an athlete".
