20040604Investigation of new Ph.D.s at the University of Navarra

The University of Navarra celebrated the doctoral inauguration ceremony who presented their thesis in the last year, since May 2003. In total, 198 from 13 Schools and colleges make up this graduating class. They come from 20 countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.

To the School of Architecture belong 4, 47 to the School of Sciences (26 in Biology, 3 in Physics, 6 in Chemistry and 12 in Biochemistry ), 5 to the School of Economics, 20 to Communication, 5 to Law, 5 to Canon Law12 to Pharmacy, 38 to Philosophy and Letters (13 to Philology, 9 to Philosophy, 3 to Sciences of Education, 9 to History and 4 to Psychopedagogy), 11 to Engineering, 31 to Medicine, 10 to Theology, 4 to the EcclesiasticalSchool of Philosophy and 6 to IESE.

At the academic ceremony, President, José Mª Bastero, addressed the new doctors with references to 2004 as the Jacobean Holy Year: "The Way of St. James, "the main street of Europe", crosses this campus of our University. Thousands of men and women pass through our midst, hard-working pilgrims on the Compostela route, which, carried out with a pilgrim spirit, becomes a way to discover, in the questioning silence of conscience, the truth that beats in our very intimacy. For those of us who work here, the Jacobean pilgrims constitute a living testimony of the deep spiritual roots of our continent; a daily reminder - because of its rich diversity of races, languages and cultures - of the universal spirit of the university task; and an interpellation staff to be coherent with our own duty. What a good place, therefore, the millenary Jacobean route to undertake this new journey that you are about to travel and that I wish you a happy and fruitful one".

The university student is, by nature, hopeful

The sponsor of the graduating class, Full Professor Ángel Luis González, congratulated the doctors and spoke of the work of university students and their spirit: "In our times, many things contribute to uncertainty, if not anxiety. But the authentic university student is, by nature, hopeful. The hopeful temperament is precisely what allows one to face the future in an adequate manner. The human being's existence in time has an axis, which gives it meaning and tempers it; that axis is hope, because - as Professor Leonardo Polo has written - it is the framework of historical existence. A university doctor has more reasons to live the different dimensions that make up hope, the virtue of great projects".

The President imposed the cap on the new doctors and, on behalf of all of them, Gorka Bastarrika (School of Medicine) said a few words of thanks. "Undoubtedly," he said, "we have reached an important point in our professional degree program , perhaps the summit of our university degree program and we are aware of it. We realize that our knowledge is but a drop in the ocean of wisdom. And we are aware of this limitation that we must face with the daily work . We must continue to have concerns, questions, doubts? The illusion that has motivated us during these years must be the basis of the foundations of the professional future that we have really just begun. Thus, we must be able to spread to our colleagues, to our environment, the illusion of our own vocation staff and collective; we must be able to spread this constant desire to learn; to know more and more".
