The University performs geothermal tests where the Biodiversity and Environment Institute and the new Science Museum will be located.

They are carried out to study the feasibility of a geothermal installation, one of the most sustainable and efficient energy systems.

The University of Navarra has begun geothermal tests on the site of the new Science extension building, which will include space for the teaching, the Biodiversity and Environment Instituteand the Science Museum.

The geothermal drilling, which has been carried out in a location close to the car park exterior of the Cima University of Navarra, is being carried out in two phases. Firstly, a borehole was drilled to a depth of 125 metres where the geothermal probe was inserted. This test has been developed during a workshop of work and has been carried out by business Atlántico Perforaciones.

The second part of the work consists of a thermal response test of the ground and will last approximately 48 hours. According to business manager - Ingeo - the test consists of recirculating water at a certain temperature through the probe in order to measure the thermal conductivity in the different strata of the ground.

Tests are carried out on buildings to assess the thermal capacity of the ground and to study the feasibility and sizing of a geothermal installation. The information obtained is also used to calculate how the installation will perform over its lifetime without running out of capacity.

Geothermal energy is one of the most sustainable and efficient energy systems because it uses the constant temperature of the subsoil to provide heat or cold to a building, significantly reducing energy consumption.

The construction of the Science extension building is one of the main objectives of the University of Navarra's Strategy 2025. Under the slogan "University and sustainability", this roadmap for the coming years has sustainability at its core, in its triple environmental, economic and social dimension.
