The importance of physical exercise and education in healthy eating habits to treat obesity or diabetes. These will be some of the topics to be discussed at the VII conference of update in Nutrition of the University of Navarra, which will be held on Friday, 8th, and Saturday 9th at auditorium of Sciences Building.
Marisol García Unciti, dietitian-nutritionist at the academic center, will offer her vision on the impact that interventions based on per diem expenses moderate hypocaloric combined with physical activity, when accompanied by hypercholesterolemia and insulin resistance, have on the treatment of obesity.
According to the expert, "a hypocaloric per diem expenses in obese people with hypercholesterolemia, combined with a strength training program significantly lowers cholesterol levels". This conclusion was reached after a study carried out on 34 women from Navarre, aged 40-60 years, with obesity and hypercholesterolemia. It was observed that both types of intervention (per diem expenses moderate hypocaloric and per diem expenses moderate hypocaloric combined with physical activity) result in similar weight loss, "around 7% of initial weight and 17-21% of abdominal fat mass" and improve glucose metabolism.
Likewise, "if the hypocaloric per diem expenses associated with strength training has a protein content of between 15 and 22% of the total daily energy value, the decrease in plasma levels of bad cholesterol is higher".
Marisol García sees in these findings a relevance internship when planning interventions that seek to modify lifestyles in the treatment of obesity and associated comorbidities.
