The University of Navarra hosted the I National meeting of the COST-920 Action "Control of food zoonoses". About twenty experts from different autonomous communities participated in this meeting, organized by Carlos Gamazo and Begoña Sesma, professors of the department of Microbiology of the academic center. The goal of this meeting was to discuss strategies for the control of foodborne zoonoses.

COST is an interstate initiative that aims to promote research projects in science and technology in Europe. A total of 34 countries are involved in more than 200 COST actions. Specifically, the COST-920 Action, which started in July 2001, is aimed at food science and technology projects. Carlos Gamazo and Begoña Sesma, professors at the University of Navarra, are the Spanish representatives in the executive committee of this action, which is made up of two members from each signatory country.

Its objectives, as explained by Professor Gamazo, are "to improve and standardize systems for the detection and identification of pathogenic microorganisms in food, to promote communication and dissemination systems at European level of research results, to evaluate microbiological risks in the food chain and to promote the basic research in this area".
