María Soto Núñez (Biochemistry 15) has received the extraordinary award awarded by the School of Sciences to the best transcript of the Degree of Biochemistry . Looking back, this graduate - committed to research, as she confesses - confirms that even the hard times have their rewards "to try to contribute a small grain of sand to the advancement of science and society".

- How did you receive the recognition of the award Extraordinary Degree?
Being awarded the award Extraordinary Degree was a real surprise for me. I knew I had a good transcript, but I did not imagine that I would be among the candidates and even less that I would be in first place, since my promotion had a high level.

Achieving it has given me the energy to continue my academic training and develop new professional projects. In addition, it symbolizes the dedication of these years and allows me to thank my parents for the trust they have placed in me.

- Is there a secret to obtain such good results in such a demanding Degree ?
First of all, having a passion for science. In my particular case, for the biomedical research , which led me to choose the Degree of Biochemistry . Secondly, to be motivated, not to conform and to persevere. In my opinion, these are essential ingredients for this profession, in which you have to be committed to the goals you set for yourself.

- Where are you going to direct your professional future now?
At the moment I am continuing my training with the Master's Degree of research Biomedical at the University of Navarra. This postgraduate program will allow me to specialize in Oncology. When I finish it I will apply my application to carry out a doctorate with accredited specialization international, probably in some research center in Madrid.

Once I complete the thesis I would like to continue with a post-doctoral research . All this to dedicate my professional life to biomedical research , and try to contribute my small grain of sand to science, whose progress improves the health and quality of life of people.

- What has been for you the best and the hardest part of studying at Degree at Biochemistry ?
Each year had some memorable moments. A very special memory was the time I spent at research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) during the last two years of degree program, thanks to the "Research Training Program". It was my first experience in a laboratory. There I discovered the dynamics of the biomedical research .

Although there were also hard times: combining theory classes and practical sessions, with the daily work and staff, was sometimes difficult, but the reward was always worth it. The exam periods were exhausting. In all there was some subject that takes the record for complexity. Even so, the more difficult periods were made bearable with the support and encouragement of family and friends, who eventually became imbued with the Biochemistry as well.

As Ray Bradbury (American science fiction writer) said, "The best scientist is open to experience, and experience begins with a romance, that is, the idea that anything is possible".
