"The double Degree Pharmacy + Human Nutrition and Dietetics expands the options to find work"

For Miriam Sesma, both facets are increasingly present in the daily work of the pharmacy office.

Miriam Sesma, a graduate of the double Degree of Pharmacy and Nutrition, has begun her professional career in the Ormazabal pharmacy, where every day she puts on internship her facets as a pharmacist and as a dietitian-nutritionist without losing sight of the fact that this profession "requires a constant update ".

Why did you want to do the double Degree?
The field of science has fascinated me since I was a child. Especially the health field area . When I was a child, I always looked at pharmacists and said that when I grew up I wanted to be like them.
When the time came, I decided to do the double Degree. I thought that nutrition was the perfect complement to our work in the pharmacy. After all, pharmacists are very close to patients, to whom we give all kinds of advice subject .

What path did you take when you finished your degree program?
While I was studying, I worked some weekends and every summer. In the last course I started to combine my nutrition internship with the work in the pharmacy. And when I finished I joined the Ormazabal Pharmacy, where work has been since then. In addition, I am constantly taking courses to keep up to date with the latest developments.

On a day-to-day basis, do you see more patients as a pharmacist or as a nutritionist?
In my work I help patients in any status, as a pharmacist or as a dietician. We give health advice, about healthy lifestyle habits, dispense medications, prepare SPDs, prepare personalized diets, etcetera. In general, I perform all the functions of a pharmacist and dietitian-nutritionist. And although the pharmacist is requested more financial aid , people are increasingly asking more and more questions related to nutrition.

The double Degree allows you to train in two areas. What are the advantages?
When I started studying the double Degree, I imagined my future combining both careers. At first I was sure I wanted to work in a pharmacy. Then I hesitated and even did half of the supervised Pharmacy internships in hospitals, which helped me to discard this option.
As for Nutrition, I had no doubts: I did my internship in a dietetic cabinet.

You now have a four-year contract, which is not very long. Do you think that studying Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Navarra may have opened doors for you?
The University of Navarra is a prestigious university. Having studied there ensures a good training , which in the end is recognized in the workplace.

What is your best memory of your college years?
The university years have been great. I met a lot of people from different countries, different cultures... During classes and internships we always helped each other. For me they are unique people with whom I will always have a friendship and with whom I have built very good memories. 

What committee would you give to a student of the Double Degree?
The Double Degree allows you to complement your training and expand the possibilities of finding work, that is why it is so recommendable.
For those who are encouraged to do it, my committee is to take advantage of the years of University by training as best as possible, to facilitate the entrance to the working world, without forgetting that this profession requires constant update to give the best service to society.
