Two of the current challenges of Big Data are the enactment of appropriate laws and the training of the new generations in the proper use of these technologies. This was stated by Jesús López Fidalgo, director of the Science Unit of data of Institute for Culture and Society and of the degree scroll Big Data Specialist of the University of Navarra, at framework on Safer Internet Day, which is celebrated on February 6.

"There is no need to be afraid of Big Data, but it does require caution. Increasingly, any activity we do is being recorded. It is true that there may be privacy challenges, but when that tool is used well, it can lead to great benefit for all citizens," he said.

From agreement with Lopez Fidalgo, one of the clearest examples of this is Google, which is based on great treatments of data. "When we do a search in a browser, it takes into account each of us in particular and provides us with relevant results according to our profile", he explained.

Follow-up of customer needs and demands

He also indicated that the so-called Big Data has an economic return for companies: "They all need to take advantage of their data to maintain a competitive level in the market".

"Having a good understanding of the needs and interests of potential customers can be very beneficial for everyone. With Big Data analysis, it is possible to track customer needs and demands almost in realtime," he said. In addition, he recalled that, apart from the private sector, it is also very useful for public institutions such as hospitals and for the research.

Finally, he stressed that Big Data "has brought us a new culture of greater transparency and new ways of relating to others", since the fact that there is more exhibition of messages and images "means that we must be more prudent and restrained with what we write and speak", which is still a good thing.
