A medical student from the University of Navarra, gold medalist in the Iberoamerican Biology Olympiad
Carlos Bravo Pérez, student , 1st year, is the first Spaniard to achieve this award
Carlos Bravo Pérez, a 1st year Medicine student at the University of Navarra, has won one of the two gold medals in the Iberoamerican Biology Olympiad. A native of Lorca (Murcia), he is the first Spaniard to win this award in the three editions of the competition held so far.
The test, which was held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, was attended by the winners of the national phases from several countries in Central and South America and the Iberian Peninsula.
Carlos Bravo first participated in the regional test in Murcia - where he won first place - and later in the national one, which also took place in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. "We were about 55 students; the first three from each autonomous community. There was a theoretical part and another internship. I was among the 8 finalists, and I qualified to participate in the Ibero-American phase," he explains.
The Ibero-American test consisted of two theoretical and four practical exams, with contents on Animal Histology, Genetics Molecular, Biochemistry and Ecology, and Plant Physiology. "It was a great experience. I met students from several countries who had the same concerns as me. There was no strong rivalry, but rather healthy competition, and we made several excursions around the island, which we combined with the exams."
Attracted by the research
In addition to participating in the Ibero-American Olympiad, the student received as award a stay at the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra. There, for seven days, he participated in sessions of work in the laboratory together with a researcher tutor .
He also got to know the campus and its Science area , where he did several practicals of laboratory of microbiology, histological preparations, spectrophotometry, dissection of an invertebrate.... In this way, Carlos Pérez Bravo got to know the University of Navarra and decided to study here, attracted, above all, "by its research".
