In addition, the answers to those questions that could not be answered live due to the limit of the broadcasting time will be published. The online section of videochats has a monthly periodicity, since it is broadcasted, at schedule from 11 to 12 hours, every second Thursday of each month.
The stroke
Cerebral vascular disease or stroke is a cerebral circulatory disorder, of sudden onset, that causes a transient alteration or final of the functioning of one or more parts of the brain.
Stroke is a medical emergency that requires early diagnosis and treatment. Ischemia can take several hours to develop and this time, called therapeutic window, is a moment core topic to avoid or minimize brain damage.
The risk factors are well known, mainly arterial hypertension, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, increased cholesterol, alcohol, tobacco or drug consumption, sedentary lifestyle and obesity favor the development of a stroke.
In general, the most common symptoms of stroke are loss of strength in half of the body, difficulty in speaking, loss of sensitivity or tingling in half of the body, sudden loss of vision in one eye, very intense headache different from the usual one, etc.
Arrival of the patient at a hospital within 6 hours of the onset of stroke is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality by 25-30%.
The Clínica Universidad de Navarra has a Stroke Unit formed by a team multidisciplinary coordinated by neurologists with training specialized in cerebrovascular diseases, who have immediate access to imaging tests and where patients are continuously monitored for early detection of factors that may aggravate the stroke, establishing the appropriate specific treatment and monitoring the evolution.
In addition, the Clinic has recently created the Neurorehabilitation Unit for patients with brain damage, formed by a team multidisciplinary for the treatment and research of cerebrovascular diseases. The aim of neurorehabilitation is to prevent complications and recover neurological functions that have been lost or diminished as a consequence of brain or spinal cord injury.

graduate in Medicine from the University of Santiago de Compostela and PhD (with award extraordinary) from the University of Navarra (1990). He completed the specialization program in Neurology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra. Currently, he is director of the department of Neurology at the Clinic and Professor of Neurology, accredited by the National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditationat the School of Medicine of the University of Navarra. His scientific activity has focused on the study of cerebrovascular diseases and he has directed several scientific projects. He has also been part of the scientific committee of national and international clinical programs of study . He has written more than a hundred papers published in books and international journals of the specialization program and has directed several doctoral thesis in cerebral vascular pathology.
