Dr. Matías Avila, researcher of the area of Gene Therapy and Hepatology and Full Professor of Biochemistry , has been appointed member of the committee publishing house of the journal Hepatology. Hepatology is the official journal of the AmericanAssociation for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), which brings together basic researchers and clinicians specializing in liver biology and pathophysiology. It is the leading journal in the field of Hepatology and the second with the highest impact on the area of Gastroenterology.
Matías Avila is graduate and holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid. He obtained the award Extraordinary doctorate with his thesis on intracellular signaling of insulin and neurotrophic factors, which he carried out at the high school de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols of the CSIC in Madrid, under the supervision of Dr. Isabel Varela. Between 1992 and 1995 he worked at Prof. Vicente Notario's laboratory at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington DC (USA). In 1995 he returned to the Alberto Sols Biomedical Research Center ( high school ) until October 1997, when he joined the University of Navarra.
Full Professor From Biochemistry attached to the Internal Medicine department of the School of Medicine, Dr. Avila develops his research activity at the laboratory of Hepatology Biochemistry of the CIMA. He studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms of liver disease progression. In particular, he focuses on the identification of new protective strategies and therapeutic targets to slow down the development of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
