José Ramón Villar, professor of the School of Theology of the University of Navarra, participated in an international workshop organized jointly by the University of Gdansk (Danzig, Poland) and the seminar metropolitan of Danzig. Held on June 9, eleven experts from the universities of Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw, Ljubljana (Slovenia), Zagreb (Croatia) and Navarra gave, before more than 60 attendees, several sessions that revolved around the value of Tradition in the Church.

In his talk, Professor Villar highlighted the aspect of Tradition as an existential act in the transmission of the faith. He affirmed that "fidelity or rupture with Tradition can affect the content of faith, but also its transmission by believers" and presented two contemporary situations that reflect this. He also offered some suggestions to face the present moment, "above all the incidence that the testimony staff has in the transmission of the Gospel".

As he affirmed, "the testimony of life is essential for the transmission of the faith, because the Christian Tradition is not only a simple religious message, but the acceptance and submission in act of the gift of salvation that is Christ himself". He pointed out that welcoming and submit Christ is the essence of what it means to be Christian, and is the bond that makes the Church one and identical throughout history: "Therefore, the continuity or rupture of Tradition must not only consider the content that is transmitted, but the very fact of its existential transmission in action," he concluded.

José Ramón Villar is Full Professor of Systematic Theology at the School of Theology of the University of Navarra.
