Architect Luis Fernández Galiano stated at the University of Navarra that crises are opportunities for growth for all architecture:"They force us to reconsider what we are doing and to act better, in a cheaper and more efficient way, with less economic and energy costs". The Full Professor of the Polytechnic University of Madrid made these statements on the occasion of the submission of the I award FIERA, awarded for his commitment to the dissemination of modern architecture.

Luis Fernández Galiano, who gave a speech at lecture on the School of Architecture of campus after receiving the award, stressed that one of the major 'vices' of the sector has been"the use of public funds without sufficient control or reflection. This is sometimes aggravated by the narcissism of some of those involved in the whole process".

With respect to sustainability, he indicated that "great architecture has always fulfilled this characteristic: it has sought to use solar energy, be well insulated and oriented, have a sustainable form coefficient and location in the city...".

II International Fair of Architecture Publishers and Magazines

The submission of the I award FIERA took place at the framework of the II International Fair of Architecture Publishers and Magazines, which has gathered during this week editors of some of the most important architecture magazines in the world.

"Architecture magazines are facing a triple crisis: the general economic one, the one of the construction sector and the one of the paper, as young people are oriented to the consumption of digital information. But these publications will survive because they are a very important instrument of communication and training of opinion in the architectural community," the architect stressed.

Luis Fernández Galiano is Full Professor of Projects at School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM), director of the magazines AV/Arquitectura Viva, trustee of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad and member of issue of the Real Academia de Doctores. He has also been Cullinan Professor at Rice University, Franke Fellow at Yale University, researcher visitor at the Getty Center in Los Angeles and visiting critic at Harvard and Princeton, as well as at high school Berlage. He has also served as president of the jury for the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale and the 15th Chile Architecture Biennale.

His books include La quimera moderna, El fuego y la report, Spain Builds (at partnership with MoMA) and Atlas, arquitectura global circa 2000 (with the BBVA Foundation).
