"Soon we will be able to give genome sequencing as a gift to a person," according to an expert from the University of Navarra.

The School of Pharmacy celebrates its patron saint with specialists in Pharmacogenetics, Nutrigenetics, Sports Nutrition and doping.

"Soon we will be able to give the sequencing of the genome to a person," said José Luis Vizmanos, Full Professor of Biochemistry and Genetics of the University of Navarra, within the lecture series Nutri-Farma 21, held at the School Pharmacy on the occasion of its patron saint, the Immaculate Conception.

The session dedicated to Pharmacogenetics and Nutrigenetics was also attended by Azucena Aldaz, from the Pharmacy Service of the University of Navarra (CUN) and Pedro Gonzalez Muniesa, from in Nutrition of the University of Navarra. About a hundred students participated in this workshop, organized by the students, which continued with a paella accompanied by a concert. To conclude, several sports tournaments and board games took place.

Personalized medicine and nutrition

Personalized medicine still has a long way to go research. "At present, pharmacogenetics is used to make an initial selection of a patient's treatment dose, but not to individualize it. In addition, it affects few drugs and with a quite debatable probability," said Dr. Aldaz. Regarding Nutrigenetics, Dr. Gonzalez Muniesa presented a list of more than 50 "diseases related, directly or indirectly, to nutrition, such as obesity or HIV".

The Genetics is also one of the pillars of the athlete, along with "training, rest and, above all, nutrition," insisted Angulo in his speech on myths about nutrition and sport. The athlete's nutritional Education is also fundamental to keep him away from doping substances. "The athlete who dopes can pay for it with his or her life," said Dr. Calabuig. However, the research in this field is constantly advancing and "genetic doping is the future," he said.
