The museum inaugurates "Camouflages", the most complete exhibition of the artist Joan Fontcuberta
The sample brings together 7 series and more than 200 works, which constitute some of the main projects of this artist multidisciplinary, the only Spanish photographer with the award of the Hasselblad Foundation (2013), the highest international recognition of photography.
The Museum has inaugurated "Camouflages", the most complete exhibition of Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) that comes to Spain for the first time after one of his series was exhibited at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, in Paris, in 2014. It occupies 80% of the exhibition space that the building has -almost all of the 3,000 m2- with more than 200 works distributed by the 6 rooms on floor -1, one of the rooms on floor 0, the hall of the building and various exhibition corridors. Rafael Moneo's project thus takes on relevance and demonstrates his versatility and ability to enhance the work of art. "My work dialogues with Moneo's architecture. I feel that he speaks to me through the walls of the Museum and I have a great empathy with this place," said Fontcuberta.
Fontcuberta, the only Spanish photographer with the Hasselblad Foundation's award , emphasizes that "with this exhibition, I especially want to encourage the visitor's critical spirit, since a university environment is where the truth represented by an image is most questioned."
Camouflages is composed of seven of the artist's major photographic projects developed between 1982 and 2099-TheArtist and Photography, Herbarium, Sputnik, Constellations, Fauna, Orogenesis , and Camouflages. "The way I make these works speak and in this Museum is different from anywhere I have exhibited before, and I am satisfied with the voice I have achieved," said Fontcuberta at presentation. Some of the pieces on display have been loaned by the Science Museum of the University of Navarra, the Planetarium of Pamplona, the Obra Social "la Caixa" Foundation, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA).
The artist reflects on the unquestionable veracity attributed to photography not only in everyday life or in art, but also in fields such as science, history or journalism. "I set traps for the viewer and camouflage certain contents as if they were truthful so that the visitor learns to discover these underlying artifices," explained the artist. These camouflage mechanisms constitute one of the central and recurring themes in his work, and give degree scroll to this sample.
His photographs are full of references and parodic or humorous elements, which pose a reflection on the mechanisms of understanding the image in today's society. "I come from the world of advertising and Iknow that humor is a way to connect with the visitor and gain their attention and trust. I make humor a flag, it is a mark of my work", has confessed Fontcuberta.
"Doing this exhibition at the Museum has been an opportunity to establish dialogues with the university public, which I have very present. People who are being formed, who have concerns, and who question reality. With this subject of interlocutors I get a syntony that is very gratifying," said the photographer.
