Providing resources for children to become health agents. This has been the main goalof the service-learning activity promoted by the third year Nursing students, through the Healthyclassroom of the School of Nursing of the University of Navarra, in which 250 students from EducationInfants, classroomalternative and UTE (transition unit) of the Irabia-Izaga and Jesuitas schools took part.  

During the months of March and April, the schoolchildren attended three workshops previously prepared by the students of School, supervised by the teacher Maider Belintxon. These workshops consisted of wound care and preparation of a first aid kit, knowledgeof cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, and how to manage emotions well. "The activity was very dynamic and appropriate for their 5 years. These subjects are fundamental at Educationfor children because, as well as working on Educationfor health, they are learning small strategies to solve everyday problems, and they are working on their autonomy and responsibility, towards themselves and others", commented Elena Irisarri, teacher at high schoolIrabia-Izaga. 

To carry out the activity, the students Pablo Tabuenca and Valentina Zabalza, leaders of project, received trainingbeforehand from subjectof Nursing Care in Childhood and Adolescence and also from EqÜes Navarra. Thanks to this, and by means of trainingby peers, they were able to transfer the contents, the dynamics to be carried out and the materials to be used to the rest of their 65 colleagues who voluntarily wished to participate. After the workshops, all of them appreciated the children's great ability to learn and manage in complex situations. "This activity has broken all our ideas about children. It has shown us the great capacity they have, their eagerness to explore, to do and to know", explained Pablo Tabuenca.

Children, active health agents

Future nurses must be able to provide the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge to children so that they can be agents of health; this is one of the competences they develop at degree program. "With this activity we achieve a very relevant impact on two levels; on the one hand, students integrate the theoretical content and make them aware that they must adapt their outlook in order to be able to offer children competent care; and on the other hand, we encourage children to obtain more tools to increase their participation in health", commented Maider Belintxon.

In this way, this activity allows society to learn about the benefits of training children in first aid, thus generating a culture of health. "One of the main benefits for children is that they learn about first aid and the steps to follow in an emergency. From the knowledgeof issue112 to the position of the body that they should put in front of a person who is unconscious on the floor", explained one of the teachers at high schoolJesuitas after the workshops.
