A research from the University of Navarra has analyzed the keys to the relationship between the nurse and the patient with advanced and terminal cancer. The work, published in Nursing Outlook -the official journal of the American Academy of Nursing and the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science-, includes perspectives from seven countries (Canada, USA, Australia, China, Sweden, Norway and Iran) describing the experiences of 54 nurses and 63 patients.

The article highlights four main themes of the nurse-patient relationship. First, the nurse must be there, by and for the patient with advanced or terminal cancer. Second, time is needed to establish the appropriate relationship. If patients perceive that the nurse does not have time, the close relationship will not develop.

Third, nurses can promote the relationship and care. When patients perceive that they exceed their pure work duties, they may limit or develop a therapeutic relationship.

Relationship centered on patients as persons

Finally, the researchers emphasize that the effect of the relationship is seen in an increase in well-being when the nurse listens and does not judge; the patient feels safe and understood. The nurse observes that listening decreases their anxiety and pain. The nurse-patient relationship encourages them to continue living, increases their inner strength and financial aid to find meaning and peace.

In conclusion, the article advocates a caring and supportive relationship centered on patients as individuals.

The research was co-directed by María Arantzamendi, researcher of the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS), and by Mercedes Pérez, dean of the School of Nursing of the University of Navarra. Begoña Errasti Ibarrondo, from the School of Nursing; José Miguel Carrasco, from the ATLANTES Program of the ICS; Marcos Lama, head of the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital San Juan de Dios-Pamplona; and Amparo Zaragoza, from the School of Nursing, also participated.

The work is part of a project (PI13/02039) funded by the Health Fund research and co-financed by the European Regional Fund development (ERDF).
