Dr. Henar Hevia investigated the action of a molecule that could help prevent liver cancer development

The Royal Academy of Doctors has awarded the award Juan Abelló Pascual II to the thesis defended at the School of Sciences of the University of Navarra by the researcher Henar Hevia. Her study, carried out at the research center Applied Medicine (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, developed the finding of the action of a molecule in inflammatory processes that could prevent the development of liver cancer and combat autoimmune diseases. The award was awarded at the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Doctors in Madrid.

For Dr. Henar Hevia the award is "the recognition of the work that for me was the realization of the thesis doctoral. There were almost 4 years of almost exclusive dedication, behind this thesis there was a lot of work of laboratory and many hours of study. In final, this award has meant the culmination of a doctorate to which I dedicated all my time and effort".

The award-winning thesis focused on discovering the anti-inflammatory role of the molecule methylthioadenosine (MTA). According to Henar Hevia, "the administration of MTA could be effective in the treatment of diseases with an inflammatory component such as liver cirrhosis, arthritis or multiple sclerosis".

Henar Hevia, who graduated from the University of Navarra in 2002 at Biochemistry , joined the area of Hepatology and Gene Therapy at CIMA where she completed her doctoral studies at thesis . She currently works at area of research of a consultancy service belonging to the life sciences sector.
