A group of Spanish scientists belonging to the CIBERobn (research center Biomedica en network-Phisiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition), in partnership with the University of Navarra, has discovered that two hormones -leptin and ghrelin-, both involved in the regulation of appetite, influence the recovery of kilos after undergoing a weight loss diet per diem expenses , even when the diet is carried out under the supervision of a specialist and with healthy habits.

This work, directed by Ana Belén Crujeiras, points out that there are patients who have a predisposition to regain the weight lost during a per diem expenses. "That is, before starting a per diem expenses, we can identify those patients who are going to regain lost weight," says Ana Belén Crujeiras, PhD in Biology and manager of the study. "Subjects with high plasma levels of leptin and low levels of ghrelin are more likely to regain the lost kilos," adds the researcher.

Leptin, produced by adipose tissue, inhibits the desire to eat, while ghrelin is a protein synthesized by the duodenum and stomach that arouses the sensation of appetite. "Leptin is involved in the feeling of satiety and if it is increased, it takes away the desire to eat and ghrelin is the opposite. Depending on the combination of the levels of both hormones we can advance the result of a per diem expenses", says Dr. Crujeiras.
