Dr. Borja Sáez Ochoa obtains a scholarship from the AECC to promote his research on acute myeloid leukemia.
This financial aid opens the door to new alternative therapeutic targets to improve quality of life and prolong patient survival.
The association Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) has granted an financial aid of 45,000 euros per year for 3 years to Dr. Borja Sáez Ochoa, scientist at research center Médica Aplicada (CIMA), to develop his programs of study on acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. This is one of the 22 projects recognized this year by the AECC for cancer research.
The researcher of the Oncohematology Program at CIMA holds a PhD from the University of Navarra and did his training of postgraduate program at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston (USA). As he explains, "the study represents a new approach to the pathophysiology of cancer. It is one of the first international programs of study that addresses the research in cancer from a global point of view, at the tissue and organism level".
The work being developed at CIMA opens the door to new therapeutic targets, "based on the cellular interactions established in vivo by leukemia and its microenvironment to combat the disease. Its application will improve the patient's quality of life and prolong survival," concludes Dr. Sáez.
