The School of Pharmacy of the University of Navarra has organized for next October a course on aging, disease and dependence that will be aimed at graduates in Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing and other health professionals who work in the environment of the elderly or are interested in it. The course will take place during the week of October 25 to 29 at schedule from 16:00 to 20:00 hours and will be held at the classroom of Pharmacy internship of the Sciences Building of the University of Navarra.

The goal of the course, co-directed by the director of the Matía Foundation, María Isabel Genua, is to prepare professionals for a trend that indicates that in 2050 43% of the Spanish population will be over 65 years of age, the highest percentage in the world. This increase in the number of elderly people, as well as the extension of life expectancy, makes it necessary to propose strategies that contribute to improving their care and to manage and optimize the available resources.

This is the group most vulnerable population and the one with the highest risk of dependency, which results in a higher consumption of health and social resources. The Education for health is essential in addressing the social and health needs of the elderly.

Health care requires preventive strategies through proper nutrition, the knowledge of diseases and the choice of effective pharmacological treatment. The monitoring of prevention and health promotion programs should be part of the activity of all health professionals involved in the integral care of the elderly. The efficient approach to this care must be coordinated and based on the specific knowledge and skills provided by physicians, pharmacists and nurses working in the environment of the elderly person.

The course is directed by Berta Lasheras, professor at department of Pharmacology of the University of Navarra, and by María Isabel Genua, director of Innovation and development of the Matía Foundation. Registrations can be formalized by calling issue at 948 425600 (ext. 6327), by mail to administrative office of the School of Pharmacy or by contacting contact with María Pilar Redín by e-mail. The deadline to register for the course will end on October 11 and the cost of the course is 410 euros.
