Teresa Simón (FAR'08) and Marta Fernández-Galilea (Biology'07/Biochemistry '07), are the extraordinary awards of doctorate of the School of Pharmacy of the academic year 2014-2015. With this appointment the academic center recognizes the research quality of their work.

With the degree scroll "Polymeric devices as a platform for the delivery of actives involved in heart repair, Simón has focused on the search for systems for the release of active molecules involved in the regeneration of cardiac tissue after myocardial infarction. The study "used nanoparticles as well as microparticles and nanofibers," says the researcher.

Fernandez-Galilea 's work has demonstrated the ability of the antioxidant α-lipoic acid to modulate lipid metabolism in mouse and human white adipocytes. Entitled"Effects of α-lipoic acid on lipid metabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis in adipocytes: study of the molecular mechanisms involved", the research "suggests that α-lipoic acid interferes with their oxidation rather than their storage, thus possibly contributing to the possible anti-obesity properties of α-lipoic acid".

Both awardees express their joy at receiving this award that recognizes "a project in which they have invested so much enthusiasm and effort," says Fernández-Galilea. For Simón, it is also an incentive"to continue working on my future as a scientist".
