The research center in Nutrition receives an international award for a study on obesity.

The 16th John M. Kinney Award recognizes impactful research that contributes to the advancement of Nutrition.

Experts from the research center in Nutrition (CIN) of the University of Navarra have received the award "16th John M. Kinney Nestlé-Nutrition Award", award awarded by Nestlé Nutrition Institute, together with Nutritional Sciences, Education & Research Fund and the international journal Nutrition, one of the most prestigious scientific publications of its area. This award recognizes researchers who have made a significant and impactful contribution to the field of Nutrition.

The article, graduate "The subject of protein within a hypocaloric per diem expenses influences the inflammatory state associated with obesity: project RESMENA", was selected as the best in the category of 'General Nutrition' from a total of 1,600 articles. It analyzes the subject of protein consumed and its relationship with inflammation (a process linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases), observinga association between vegetable protein and a better inflammatory state.

The awarded authors are Patricia López, Rocío de la Iglesia, Itziar Abete, Santiago Navas and the professors of the School of Pharmacy Alfredo Martínez and Marian Zulet, both directors of the research and members of the high school of research Sanitaria de Navarra (IDISNA) and of the research center Biomédica en network-Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y la Nutrición (CIBERobn).

The article highlights the importance of designing a good personalized per diem expenses to obtain benefits, not only in terms of weight loss, but also in terms of other mechanisms that are altered in people with obesity. In this sense, obesity has an inflammatory component. In this regard, the research concludes that the subject of protein consumed, more than the amount, influences the inflammatory state of the patient. Specifically, it suggests that following a per diem expenses leave in calories can offer greater benefits if it takes into account for its design, the contribution of vegetable protein (legumes, nuts, nuts, whole grains) versus protein from animal sources.

This award recognizes the work of the CIN in the search for dietary strategies to combat obesity and its co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease".

The award was presented in Lisbon at the framework of the 37th congress European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (37th ESPEN Congress).
