María José Cobo (Master's Degree E-MENU 16) had it clear, even before starting the postgraduate program in Food, Nutrition and Metabolism, that she would develop her final work in another country. In fact, it was the international aspect of the Master's Degree of the School of Pharmacy of the University of Navarra that prompted her to take this specialization, with the goal of orienting her degree program to Clinical Nutrition.
- What project are you doing and why did you choose Maastricht as the city to carry out your TFM?
The project I am participating in is PREVIEW -Prevention of Diabetes Through Lifestyle Intervention and Population Studies in Europe and Around the World-. Even before I enrolled in Master's Degree it was clear to me that I wanted to do my TFM in another country. In fact, this was one of the reasons why I chose E-MENU. Regarding Maastricht, students from previous years also came here to do their TFM, so, given the relationship between the director of Master's Degree, Professor Alfredo Martínez, and my tutor here in the Netherlands, Dr. Margriet Westerterp, it seemed like a good option. On the other hand, I had always wanted to visit Holland.
- How do you value the training received at School for the performance of your current project ?
The training received at the University of Navarra has been really useful for some of the activities I am doing. For example, having attended the Journal Club in Pamplona has allowed me to be able to do them here myself. And now that I have to do data analysis, I can appreciate the usefulness of the statistics classes. The same goes for all the papers and articles in English that we had to read in different subjects. In addition, at class we did quite a lot of summaries, which has helped me to know how to identify and extract the main and most important ideas from each article. Finally, the approach we took to experimental topics, although it was not very intense, I am also applying everything I learned in my day to day life in Maastricht.
- How do you envision your professional future? What would you like to do after the TFM?
I have always wanted to pursue a career in Clinical Nutrition. In particular, I am interested in the treatment of eating disorders. That is why at the end of the Master's Degree I am going to focus my search for work on this field. However, now that I have had the opportunity to enter the world of research, I would not mind going into this field either.
- If you had to condense in a few lines the strong points of Master's Degree E-MENU, what would they be?
When I finished the degree program, I started looking for masters in the field of Human Nutrition and E-MENU caught my attention and convinced me for three reasons: because of the possibility of doing my Master's thesis in another country, because it has two branches to choose from -research and academic-, and because of its prestige, both nationally and internationally. Now that I am in the middle of the course, I can also say that this program offers a global vision of the many aspects that make up Nutrition and other related areas. At the same time, the program focuses on the most important and innovative aspects, which guarantees, at the end, a broad knowledge on several areas of health sciences.
