Study shows that the Mediterranean per diem expenses reduces overweight or obesity associated with menopause

Experts from the research center in Nutrition of the University of Navarra and the committee General de Colegios Oficiales de Farmacéuticos Españoles (CGCOF) have carried out a study that shows that the greater the adherence to the per diem expenses Mediterranean diet, the lower the possibility of suffering from overweight or obesity associated with menopause. This is published today in Menopause, the North American journal with the highest impact on its area.

The research, developed within the V National Plan of Education Nutritional of the Vocalía de Alimentación del CGCOF, has counted 8,954 Spanish perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. Through a nutritional model , the study has assessed the probability of being overweight or obese in relation to the Degree adherence to the Mediterranean per diem expenses , also taking into account the symptoms of menopause or the absence of them. 

Reducing symptoms

According to Alfredo Martínez, Full Professor of Nutrition at the University of Navarra and researcher principal of group, "following this dietary patron saint , together with an adequate body mass index, could improve the quality of life of women in these stages".

The main goal of this study is to provide the population with information on healthy habits and a balanced per diem expenses to help them maintain good health and reduce symptoms. The data, collected in pharmacies throughout Spain through the coordination of the CGCOF, were analyzed at the University of Navarra.

The patron saint of per diem expenses Mediterranean consists of an abundant consumption of olive oil (main fat source ), plant foods (vegetables, fruits, cereals and nuts), fresh fruit as a daily dessert, moderate consumption of dairy products (cheese and yogurt), fish and poultry, leave intake of red meat and moderate consumption of wine with meals.
