An expert at the University of Navarra stresses planning and balance as the basis for a healthy diet

200 schoolchildren from Navarre attended the lecture of Dr. Irene Cantero in which she explained how to avoid some diseases with a proper diet

"To achieve a healthy eating style it is important to achieve emotional, physical, psychological and social wellbeing". This was one of the recommendations that Dr. Irene Cantero made to the more than 200 schoolchildren who attended her lecture entitled 'financial aid a good diet to prevent diseases?', held at auditorium of Sciences Building of the University of Navarra, on the occasion of the celebration of Science Week.

Cantero pointed out the urgency of combating some diseases - cardiovascular problems, overweight, diabetes subject II and blood pressure - which are one of the main health problems in our society and whose causes "are related to an inadequate diet and a lack of significant activity". 

Dr. Cantero explained how to address the metabolic syndrome, the keys to the Mediterranean per diem expenses , the different food groups and macronutrients, as well as their adequate consumption to achieve a healthy life. "The acquisition of good eating habits from childhood and adolescence is one of the basic pillars for good health," she added.

Other advice offered by nutritionist Irene Cantero was to plan meals and dinners well during the week to "avoid inappropriate food choices"; to eat an adequate amount of fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products; to avoid sweets, pastries, cold meats and precooked products; to pay attention to nutritional labeling; to cook with simple culinary technologies to avoid excess fat; to eat slowly and to exercise regularly.

As a general recommendation, the nutritionist insisted that attendees opt for a menu containing: vegetables; proteins; whole-grain carbohydrates; fruit; extra virgin olive oil and water.
