CORONAVIRUS STORIES
The state of alarm decreed in Spain and the confinement of the general population has partially paralyzed people's lives. In the School of Sciences we have accelerated the adaptation to try to make everything work normally, with a special effort in our teaching. On this occasion we tell you how some of our teachers are living the experience.

Juana Fernández

"I have chosen to give live classes because I like to receive feedback from the students, to feel that they are following the explanations and to solve doubts as the syllabus progresses".

Juana Fernández is a teacher at department of Chemistry and teaches class in the 1st year of Environmental Sciences and in the 3rd year of the double degree Degree of Biology and Environmental Sciences. The exceptional status has led her to set up a classroom in her own home. The teacher tells us that she has employee the tool Google Meet for the teaching and tutorials. "I have had the opportunity to introduce my 3-year-old daughter to the students. I have also met some of their pets. From my point of view, those moments bring us closer in the distance, keeping the quality in the teaching".

"We adapted quickly but I already miss the students, the walks to classroom 34, the chalk and blackboard."

José María Fernández, Full Professor of department of Chemistry, tells us that he is living this experience with the illusion that the students continue with their training. The teacher told us that he is trying to get the most out of teaching online although he misses the direct contact with the students at classroom "especially because you don't see their expressive faces that betray understanding or doubts".

"In the same day and in the same space we get to be professionals, mothers, educators and even friends."

Raquel Conde is a teacher at department of Microbiology and Parasitology. This is her first experience with teaching online and she highlights the availability and submission of her students. On the other hand, Raquel tells us about the real challenge involved in combining teaching with family life, which she herself solves with organization and imagination. "The status is helping us to appreciate even more the importance of living in society and the role we all play to make the day to day work".

"The students are being able to follow the syllabus without any novelty, except for the internships."

Enrique Baquero, professor at department of Environmental Biology, has been able to continue his teaching online with almost no restrictions. The professor points out that new technologies have been in our homes for a long time and this has meant that in the university environment "we have hardly noticed that we have had to stay at home". The professor points out the importance of setting a schedule in this subject of exceptional situations to be able to perform telework as well as other responsibilities in the family environment.

"Despite the online communication with the students, I miss seeing their faces and dialogue with them during the internship."

Cristina Sola is staff Support teaching at department of Chemistry. The teacher tells us that she is developing new materials for the online experimental teaching of the subjects that are being taught, through Genially or Panopto and, on the other hand, editing didactic videos on basic operations of laboratory for a project of innovation in education. Cristina has an original way to reconcile family life and to respond to her informative work of Chemistry. "I do physics experiments and Chemistry with my children and we record them to share them on social networks so that other families have ideas for learning and entertainment".

Silvia Cenoz

"Although at home I can't test experiments for practice, improvements can always be made to the protocols we already have."

Silvia Cenoz is staff of Support to teaching at department of Biochemistry and Genetics. With the cancellation of the face-to-face practicals, she has focused on coordinating the practical classes for the next academic year since, as Silvia reminds us, "in the three practical laboratories of department there are about twenty subjects of different courses and Degrees of the University, so we have to make all the requests of the coordinators fit together".

"In general, the theoretical classes and workshops can be adapted well, and it is the field trips that remain for the moment at Fail".
Ana Villarroya teaches the subjects "LandscapeRestoration" and "EnvironmentalEducation" at department of Environmental Biology. The teacher is preparing theoretical classes and scripts "to facilitate the work team work that students have to do in the subjects" and to adapt the material to teaching online. On the other hand, Ana has installed a "mini-office" at home so that her children can carry out activities while she and her husband telework.
