Dr. Mª Pilar Civeira, professor at the University of Navarra, has taken possession of the Chair of Internal Medicine at the University of La Coruña.

Born in Zaragoza, she studied Internal Medicine at the University of Barcelona at specialization program . In 1979 she joined the University of Navarra, where she did her doctorate, with which she obtained the award Extraordinary. In the School of Medicine she has combined, since the early 80's, an intense work professor and research without forgetting her work as a consultant at the University Clinic.

Her main dedication, in the field of internal medicine, has been the research on hepatitis and more specifically viral hepatitis. Director of the laboratory of Immunology of the department of Internal Medicine, she has studied the different types of hepatitis and its possible treatment, directed thesis doctoral and presented more than one hundred communications to national and international congresses of her specialization program. She has also published chapters in twelve books and 54 articles in scientific journals.

Hepatitis expert

Between 1986 and 1988, he worked at Bethesda Hospital, USA, at Dr. Gallo's laboratory , and developed in vitro techniques for the essay of compounds with antiviral activity against the AIDS virus. He has also worked at research centers in Lyon, Paris and London.

She belongs to the committee of experts in hepatitis of the Government of Navarra and to the Research Committee Clínica Universitaria. She has participated as principal investigator in three funded research projects on hepatitis C and has collaborated in six others carried out at department Internal Medicine.

Daughter of a University Full Professor , she is one of the few women who have obtained Chair of Internal Medicine. At the University of A Coruña, she plans to continue working on the study of hepatitis C and interferon, the protein that has been used for the treatment of this disease, at partnership with the University Clinic.
