On March 13 and 14, Pamplona and Cascante became the epicenter of research with the holding of meeting 4th meeting in Antiquity” meeting , organized by the University of Navarra and the association of Friends of Cascante, which revived a series of events that took place between 2004 and 2011 but had not been held since then. It also benefited from the partnership the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities; the State research Agency; and the Society of programs of study of Navarra.
Under the degree scroll Parva Oppida Vasconum: Economics, Territory, and Production in the Basque-Aquitanian Region in Antiquity (1st century BCE–3rd century CE)," experts from various universities and institutions analyzed the region’s trade networks and production systems during the High Empire. The congress structured around three major geographical blocks to address the complexity of the territory. In the first part, featuring presentations on area and northern area , topics such as coin production at Basque mints, trans-Pyrenean relations as evidenced by pottery from Iluro and Iaca, and the economic dynamism of ports such as Oiasso (Irún) were discussed.
In the second part, which focused on the central and eastern Pre-Pyrenean region, the presentations highlighted the sustainability of towns such as Los Bañales, the development of Santa Criz de Eslava—both urban settlements where students from the University of Navarra are participating in excavations—and the role of local elites in the growth of these settlements. The workshop focused on core topic municipalities core topic Ebro region, such as Cascantum ( Cascante), Calagurris (Calahorra), and Cara ( Santacara), analyzing their ceramic production and their role in the Aragón and Arga river basins.
The event featured notable presentations, including Francisco Beltrán’s (University of Zaragoza) discussion paper on Pliny’s references to the Vascones, and a session by Javier Andreu, director Diploma Archaeology at the University of Navarra, who provided an update the current state of research programs of study Economics programs of study Economics the region during antiquity. Additionally, recent findings from the Aierdi mining complex (Lantz) and new evidence from the mansio at Aracaeli were presented.
