"Beer, whether with or without alcohol, can be included in the usual per diem expenses of athletes," according to Juan Antonio Corbalán, former basketball player and cardiologist at the Exercise Physiology Unit of the high school of Functional Rehabilitation and Applied Sports Sciences. This was stated at the School of Pharmacy at the presentation of the first research on the drinking habits of athletes.

The goal of the study, graduate "Comparison of the consumption habits of beverages with alcoholic content of Spanish athletes versus control population", aimed to determine, through different surveys, the relationship between the internship sports, in its different Degrees, with healthy lifestyle habits and, specifically, with the intake of liquids other than water, such as fermented beverages with low alcoholic content (beer, wine or cider) and other beverages with higher alcoholic content.

Accompanied by Alberto Pérez Mediavilla, Associate Dean of Alumni of the academic center, Corbalán presented the results of this research, in which doctors Javier framework and Cristina Fernández also collaborated. Among them, he emphasized that "the high water content and the balance of its components (carbohydrates, low sodium content and absence of fats) make beer a refreshing drink with a very low caloric intake, also due to the fact that it is the lowest alcoholic beverage, around 4º-6º". These characteristics mean that "the simple fact of going out from time to time with your family or friends for an aperitif and sharing a few beers should be the rule, not the exception, since the sportsman should not be identified exclusively as a mere source to obtain sports results".

More than 70 people, mostly students from Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and diploma in Sports Nutrition, attended this presentation which concluded with a beer-marinated Mediterranean cocktail.
