The per diem expenses influences the aging of people at high risk of cardiovascular disease. This is demonstrated by a study, led by the University of Navarra, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the world's leading scientific journal in the field of nutrition.

The research is part of the PREDIMED-Navarra study (prevention with per diem expenses Mediterranean). It is coordinated by Amelia Martí, Professor of Physiology atthe School Pharmacy of the University of Navarra, and involves experts from the Institute of research Sanitaria de Navarra (IDISNA), the research center Biomedica en network en Fisiopalogía de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBERobn) of the Carlos III Institute, the Institute of research Sanitaria Pere Virgili, the University of Malaga and the University of South Carolina (USA).

The study involved 520 participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease and showed that in these individuals there is a association between the inflammatory potential of per diem expenses and the shortening of telomeres (ends of DNA chromosomes considered biomarkers of the aging process).

Thus, the results suggest that per diem expenses may play a role core topic as a determinant of telomere length through proinflammatory or anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Thus, says Amelia Martí, "adherence to a healthy (anti-inflammatory) per diem expenses slows down the natural telomere shortening that occurs with age".
